Finals Day 2003 |
|
|
A bright and sunny day drew a large audience of club members for finals day 2003. Three champions were defending their trophies, and three were to fall in an exciting display of bowling. In the Mens' Championship (Roy Warburton Cup) newcomer Rod Payne took a commanding lead of 11-3 and despite a stawart rearguard action from defending champion Emrys Davies held on for a 21-15 victory in his first year with Club. |
The Ladies championship (Frank Richards Cup) was closely fought between defending champion Kath Matthews and Ladies Captain Ruth Lowe and featured close measures and not a little controversy over a displaced jack. In the end Ruth took victory by just two shots 21-19.
The Veterans' competition (Cyril Davies Trophy) was the battle of the Dennises, with Dennis Blake defeating the champion Dennis Collins 21-14 to record his fifth victory in the tournament.

Emrys and Dennis Collins then took to the green again to contest the final of the Mike Caird Cup - the new Club competition played in sets. Emrys took a commanding lead in the first set, establishing an unassailable lead without playing the tenth end. The second set was closer, but Emrys again took the upper hand to win by two sets to love, leaving Dennis Collins the unlucky double-loser on the day. |
Chairman Frank Hill closed the day thanking all for taking part and Captain Grenville Watton made the presentations (from left - to Ruth, Rod, Dennis & Emrys). Some unkind wag unnecessarly suggested that this was the only way he was going to get into the photographs this year!
